To set it up, he was a hippie in the early 70′s, traveling through the Middle East, and found himself becoming a Buddhist monk for a time. Excerpt from the book by Stephen Batchelor. This post is Part Three in a series concerning Stephen Batchelor, author of Buddhism Without Beliefs and Confessions of a Buddhist Atheist (here is a link to a list of Batchelor's publications at his website). CJ Vapenik got about 4 books on the burner NOT counting what i have to read for school. Right now I'm just reading Batchelor's "Confessions of a Buddhist Atheist" but I should probably go back and read his earlier book "Buddhism without Beliefs" as well. At the end of his book Confession of a Buddhist Atheist, Stephen Batchelor speaks about a secular religion, a beliefless practice, although he understands the contradictory nature of the terms. I figure it saves trees, and if I really love the book, I'll buy the hard copy. As I post this I should note that Stephen's own latest work, Confession of a Buddhist Atheist, is the subject of a review posted yesterday by James Ishmael Ford at his blog Monkey Mind. I am a novice exploring Zen Buddhism & sharing what I find along the way. Renowned Buddhist scholar and author Stephen Batchelor and his wife, Martine Batchelor, author, spiritual counselor and meditation teacher, will make a rare appearance this weekend, Nov. I'd recommend “Confessions of a Budddhist Atheist” or better, “Buddhism Without Beliefs” – both by Stephen Batchelor – for a reasonable form of Buddhism based on what the original Buddha actually taught. In it, he tells his own story of embracing, then rejecting, both Tibetan Buddhism and Zen. Stephen Batchelor has recently written a particularly interesting book, Confessions of a Buddhist Atheist. Especially interesting in light of the writing of Stephen Batchelor (Confessions of a Buddhist Atheist) and other american contempory writers who advocate for a decidedly non-supernatural (for lack of a better word) Buddhism. This is a confession of someone trying to find himself and his way in the larger world. This week I read most of “Confession of a Buddhist Atheist” which recounts SB's journey along the Buddhist path and the difficulties he had with it, particularly the cultural differences.
